A lone cowboy sits motionless on his horse in a vast prairie. His lowered head, accentuated by the tilt of his hat, confirms the painting's title. Yet, his grip on the reigns suggests it’s only a temporary respite and, in a minute or two, he and his steed, which appears alert and ready, will resume their work. Masters and his wife, Carlene, made 2 trips to the West, one to San Francisco in 1962 and another to Mexico in 1966[1]. Years later, photos from these trips served as inspiration for a small group of western scenes. [1] The 1966 trip to San Francisco was to the Photographic Society of America awards ceremony where his film, "The Storm", won the top five honors.
